Thayil Jacob Sony George is an Indian journalist and author born in 1928 in Thumpamon, Kerala. He co-founded the news magazine Asiaweek in Hong Kong in 1975. George worked as an editor and writer with The New Indian Express and other prominent Indian newspapers. He is known for his columns and commentary on political and social issues. George has written several books, including biographies and works on Indian culture. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, in 2011 for his contributions to journalism, and the National RedInk Award for Lifetime Achievement, given by Mumbai Press Club in 2022.
His penetrating 1973 study of independent Singapore’s founding prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew’s Singapore (published by André Deutch Ltd.) was banned by Singapore authorities.
