Craig Newmark Philanthropies, launched in 2015, by the man who who started Craigslist.com. Craig Newmark is a philanthropist who describes himself as “an old-school nerd helping to protect the people who protect our country.”
Newmark believes in the American Press Institute’s Guiding Principles for Funders of Nonprofit media, and in its ethos of “balancing transparency with intent to do good while doing no harm.” Keeping this in mind, Newmark finds people or groups who do good work well, provides support and lets them do their jobs. As Newmark says, “I provide them with resources, and then get outta their way.” Since the beginning Craig has donated more than “$50 million,” according to the website, “to newsrooms, journalism schools, and efforts to protect reporters on the frontlines of protecting our country.”
After Newmark gave a $20 million gift to the City of New York’s School of Journalism In 2018 , the school was renamed the Craig Newmark School of Journalism. Newmark’s grants have funded the Columbia Journalism Review, the Poynter Foundation, ProPublica’s newsroom, reporter protection efforts at the International Women’s Media Foundation.
