Use of DataChicago Tribune founded in 1847 is a daily broadsheet and digital site published by Chicago Tribune Publishing Group and Alden Global Capital. Executive editor of the Tribune is Mitch Pugh.
In the 1850s, owner and managing editor, Joseph Medill, helped make the Tribune one of the largest papers in the Chicago region.. Under his leadership, the paper championed Lincoln and the Republican party, but also held the notion that Lincoln and Republicans were the Tribune’s exclusive territory.
The paper took on a conservative mantel in the early 20th century, advocating against the New Deal. Years later, a famous 1948 gaffe made history. During a writer’s strike, they published a headline and article based on the voting results that night. The resulting headline, “Dewey Beats Truman,” turned out so wrong that the winner, Truman, held up the newspaper for a now famous photo.
Alden Global Capital purchased the paper in 2021 and reduced the paper’s staff by 25 percent.
Over the years, Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, the body that administers Pulitzer Prizes, has awarded 28 prizes, mostly for editorial writing, to the Chicago Tribune.
