History and Founding

The Weizmann Archives are administered under the auspices of Yad Chaim Weizmann, the official memorial and heritage institution dedicated to Dr. Chaim Weizmann (1874–1952), the first President of the State of Israel. Yad Chaim Weizmann was founded in 1953, one year after Weizmann's death, and is situated on the campus of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. The Institute itself was established in 1949 by act of the Knesset, evolving from the Daniel Sieff Research Institute that Weizmann had founded in 1934.

Collections and Holdings

The Weizmann Archives house the complete written legacy of Chaim Weizmann, comprising more than 200,000 documents. The holdings include correspondence, photographs, newspaper articles, manuscripts, and official papers spanning his decades as a Zionist leader, chemist, and statesman. Among the most notable items are letters to and from Albert Einstein, Lord Arthur James Balfour, and other major figures of the twentieth century. The archive preserves Weizmann's papers from 1885 through his death in 1952, along with related pre-Federal and post-Federal records from international contacts.

Notable Materials

The archives are a primary resource for researchers studying the history of Zionism, the founding of the State of Israel, modern Jewish political history, and the history of science in the twentieth century. Press clippings and correspondence documenting Weizmann's media engagements and his role as a public intellectual are also preserved here.

Access and Usage

The Weizmann Archives are located adjacent to the Weizmann House on the campus of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Researchers seeking access to the materials should contact the archives directly. The archives are part of a broader memorial complex that also includes the gravesite of Chaim and Vera Weizmann, the Weizmann House, and a Memorial Plaza.
