WBRC (channel 6) is a television station in Birmingham, Alabama, affiliated with Fox. It is owned by Gray Media alongside low-power Telemundo affiliate WTBM-CD. Studios and transmitter facilities sit atop Red Mountain in southeastern Birmingham.
WBRC-TV first signed on July 1, 1949, originally on VHF channel 4, named for Bell Radio Company after founder J.C. Bell. Owner Eloise Hanna repurposed a powerful FM transmitter for the new television venture. The station was sold by Taft to Great American Radio & TV Corporation in 1987, to Citicasters in 1993, and to New World Inc. in 1994; New World's affiliation deal moved the station from ABC to Fox on September 1, 1996, ending its 25-year run as one of ABC's strongest affiliates. Fox itself owned WBRC as an O&O until selling it, along with seven other stations, to Local TV LLC in 2008. In 2009, Local TV traded WBRC to Raycom Media, which was controlled by the Retirement Systems of Alabama. Gray Television acquired WBRC when it purchased Raycom Media, with the deal closing January 2, 2019.
