Use of DataThe University of Washington Libraries Digital Collections is the digital archive portal of the University of Washington Libraries in Seattle. The UW Library system was established in 1882 alongside the university itself and has been collecting historical materials since at least 1905, when the catalog listed a dedicated 'University History' section. The purchase of Clarence Booth Bagley's collection of Northwest Americana in 1919 helped establish the Manuscripts collection. The digital collections portal, accessible at content.lib.washington.edu, has grown to encompass hundreds of digitized collections from Special Collections and partner institutions across the Pacific Northwest.
The UW Libraries Digital Collections portal provides free online access to a wide range of primary source materials drawn from the university's Special Collections, partner historical societies, and other institutions. Collections include historical photographs, manuscripts, maps, oral histories, audio recordings, newspapers, and ephemera with strengths in Pacific Northwest history, Alaska and the Yukon, Native American cultures, labor history, and Asian American history. The Labor Archives of Washington, housed within Special Collections, documents the history of the labor movement in the region. The UW Libraries system as a whole holds over 7 million unique titles and serves as a Federal Depository Library for U.S. government publications.
The digital collections include historically significant newspaper holdings, including digitized runs of newspapers documenting Pacific Northwest history. The portal includes materials from the Association of King County Historical Organizations (61 member institutions) and community-produced oral histories. The UW Libraries subscribe to major newspaper archives including the Chicago Defender, Rolling Stone Archive, and others. As a major Federal Depository Library, the collections include government publications and communications materials relevant to media history research.
The digital collections portal is available online 24/7 at content.lib.washington.edu. Physical Special Collections are accessible at the University of Washington Libraries, Box 352900, Seattle, WA 98195. Reference services are available by email, phone, and live chat. Some digitized collections are restricted to UW affiliates; the majority are publicly available.
