The Washington Post, "The Post", "WaPo," holds bureaus in 20 countries including the United Kingdom, India, Russia and Mexico. It claims a digital viewership of over 58 million as of December 2022.
In 1877, Stilson Hutchins founded The Post. In 1905, The McLean family of Cincinnati bought controlling interest. In 1933, Eugene Meyer, a successful financier who became Chairman of the Federal Reserve, acquired The Post at a bankruptcy auction for $825,000.
Meyer's daughter, Katharine Graham, and her husband Philip Graham took over the newspaper's management after Meyer's death. Katharine Graham assumed full control of The Post after her husband’s demise and under her leadership the newspaper became known for its investigative journalism.
After her death in 2001, Katharine Graham's son, Donald E. Graham, took over as the publisher of The Post. In 2013, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos purchased The Post from the Graham family for $250 million.
The Post’s revenue in 2022 was $310 million.
