The Modern Records Centre (MRC) at the University of Warwick was founded in October 1973 with the principal objectives of locating and preserving primary sources for modern British social, political, and economic history, with special concentration on the national history of industrial relations, industrial politics, and labour history. Three academics — George Bain, Hugh Clegg, and Tony Topham — were instrumental in making the case for the Centre's establishment. It was formed as the first archival institution in Britain to include the preservation of national trade union records as part of its core collecting policy. The MRC celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023. It is the institutional repository of the University of Warwick and its entire holdings have been designated as pre-eminent collections of national and international importance under the Arts Council's Designation Scheme.
The MRC holds collections extending over more than 16 kilometres of shelving. It is the world's largest repository for British industrial relations archives and includes the records of over 500 trade unions. Key collections include the archives of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the Transport and General Workers' Union, the International Transport Workers' Federation, and numerous individual union and employer organization records. The Centre also holds archives of radical and fringe political parties, pressure and protest groups, records relating to cycling and the National Cycle Archive, and the personal papers of politicians, trade union leaders, academics, and campaigners. The institutional archives of the University of Warwick are also held here.
The MRC holds archival materials of the print workers' unions, including the Printing and Kindred Trades Federation and related bodies, offering primary sources for the history of printing and press workers in Britain. Records of radical publications, social work and welfare organizations, and civil rights campaigns provide context for understanding how labour and advocacy movements intersected with media and public discourse. The Review Press Limited (formerly Brewing Trade Review Limited) collection is among the holdings relating to trade periodicals.
The MRC searchroom is open five days a week and provides a dedicated research space for archival consultation with staff support. Reader registration is required. Digitized collections and online resources are freely available through the MRC website. The Centre provides archival teaching support for University of Warwick students and accepts visiting researchers from outside the university. Collections are stored in climate-controlled secure storage on campus and in an offsite facility opened in 2022.
