Montpelier, Vermont, USA
VTDigger is a nonprofit, statewide digital news organization covering Vermont politics, economy, environment, education and culture. It is the largest newsroom in Vermont and a project of the nonprofit Vermont Journalism Trust.
VTDigger was founded in September 2009 by Anne Galloway, a journalist laid off from the Rutland Herald and Barre-Montpelier Times Argus, starting with a $16,000 budget and no employees. The outlet merged with the newly formed nonprofit Vermont Journalism Trust in 2010. Galloway's investigative reporting on the EB-5 investor fraud scandal at Jay Peak became one of the outlet's signature stories. Galloway stepped down as executive director in May 2022, remaining as editor-at-large; Schuyler "Sky" Barsch became CEO in April 2023. Barsch announced in January 2026 that she would step down effective June 1, 2026, and editor-in-chief Geeta Anand announced her departure the same spring. Brendan Kinney, chief operating officer of Vermont Public, was named the Vermont Journalism Trust's incoming CEO in May 2026, with veteran Vermont journalist Susan Allen serving as interim editor-in-chief.
