History and Founding

The Division of Libraries, Archives, and Museums (DLAM) of the United States Virgin Islands is administered under the Government of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR). The Territorial Archives preserve historical records of the islands, including documents dating from the Danish colonial period, before the United States purchased the islands from Denmark in 1917. The collections contain early records written in Danish as well as other historical documents covering the period since the islands became part of the USA. NARA has historically assisted with records management for the Territorial Archives.

Collections and Holdings

The Territorial Archives are housed at two locations: the Enid M. Baa Library on St. Thomas and the Florence Williams Library on St. Croix. Holdings include colonial-era Danish records, territorial government documents, historical photographs, and genealogical records relevant to the Virgin Islands. The Von Scholten Collection at the Enid Baa Library and the Caribbean Collection at the Florence Williams Library are among the significant research holdings. The DLAM also administers historic forts on the islands that serve as museums.

Notable Materials

For researchers interested in journalism and media history, the DLAM holds newspaper collections and records documenting island life and governance from multiple eras. The Territorial Archives include records of legislative, judicial, and executive functions of the U.S. Virgin Islands government.

Researchers may visit either the Enid M. Baa Library in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, or the Florence Williams Library in Christiansted, St. Croix.
