Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) is a public research university system with 12 member universities and schools across seven campuses in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Journalism education within VNU is provided by the Institute of Journalism and Communication at the VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-USSH). A Faculty of Journalism was established at Hanoi General University in 1990, and the first journalism course opened on 12 October 1991 with 160 students. VNU-USSH began postgraduate journalism training in 1997 and doctoral training in 2007. The faculty was renamed the Faculty of Journalism and Communication in 2008 and reorganized as the Institute of Journalism and Communication on 18 July 2018, combining the faculty with the university's Center for Media Practice. The Institute offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs in Journalism and in Public Relations.
Vietnam National University, Hanoi traces its lineage to the University of Indochina, established in 1906, which was reorganized as Vietnam National University in November 1945 and as the University of Hanoi in June 1956. The present institution was created in 1993 through the merger of the University of Hanoi, the Hanoi National University of Education and the College of Foreign Languages.
