Use of DataThe Vermont State Archives and Records Administration (VSARA) is a state government agency within the Office of the Vermont Secretary of State. VSARA serves as both the official state archives and the public records management authority for Vermont, preserving and providing access to the historical and contemporary records of Vermont state government.
VSARA was established in 2008 by Act 96, which consolidated the Public Records Division within the Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services with the State Archives Division of the Office of the Secretary of State. The state archives function itself predates the 2008 consolidation, with Vermont's governmental records having been maintained since the state's founding in 1777. Tanya Marshall serves as State Archivist and Chief Records Officer.
VSARA holds archival public records of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of Vermont state government from 1777 to the present. Holdings include early constitutional records, legislative proceedings, executive correspondence, court records, land records, and maps. The institution also operates VT Re·tain, a digital repository for state archival public records in all formats. Some collections include records from Vermont counties, municipalities, and individuals with ties to state government.
VSARA's holdings include historical legislative records, executive communications, and official publications that document Vermont's governance and public affairs from statehood onward. These records are valuable to journalists, historians, and civic researchers tracing the development of Vermont's government and society.
VSARA is open Monday through Friday, 09:00–16:00. Appointments are recommended for in-person research. Archives may be searched and requested via the VSARA website and the VT Re·tain digital repository. Fees may apply for certain services.
