The UZH Archives (Universitätsarchiv Zürich, UAZ) is the central archive of the University of Zurich (Universität Zürich, UZH), Switzerland's largest university with approximately 28,000 enrolled students. The archives is responsible for acquiring, selecting, and processing archival material generated by the organizational units of the University of Zurich, and also holds papers of individuals and societies connected to UZH. It is located at the main university building on Rämistrasse 71, Zurich.
The University of Zurich was founded on April 29, 1833, as the first university in Europe to be founded by a state rather than a monarch or church. The university's earliest archival records, held in the rector's office, date from that founding year. From 1984 onward, the university undertook a systematic reform of its archives management, and a formal archivist position was requested in 1985. Until 1998, when UZH became an independent public-law institution, its holdings were regularly transferred to the State Archives of the Canton of Zürich (Staatsarchiv Zürich). The UZH Archives formally consolidated in 1998, incorporating the former Documentation Centre for University History (Dokumentationsstelle für Universitätsgeschichte, DUG) in 1997. The archives is a member of the Association of Swiss Archivists and the Swiss Historical Society.
The UZH Archives is organized into five sections:
Pre-1998 university records are held at the State Archives of the Canton of Zürich (Staatsarchiv Zürich). The UZH Archives also maintains a reference library on university history.
Access to holdings is provided in compliance with the archival law and information and data protection law of the Canton of Zürich. The archives is accessible to researchers for academic and administrative purposes. Archival descriptions can be searched via the Swiss archival portal swisscollections.
