Overview

UvA-DARE (Digital Academic Repository) is the institutional open-access repository of the University of Amsterdam (Universiteit van Amsterdam), one of Europe's leading research universities. Managed by the University of Amsterdam Library, UvA-DARE collects, archives, and disseminates the scholarly publications produced by UvA researchers, making them accessible within an international network of scientific and scholarly information services.

History and Institutional Context

The University of Amsterdam was founded in 1632 and has grown into one of the largest universities in the Netherlands with tens of thousands of students. UvA-DARE was established as part of the global movement toward open-access scholarship and institutional repository management, and was registered with international repository directories from the mid-2000s. It is operated in conjunction with Pure, the university's research information system, through which publications registered by institutes are validated by the University Library before becoming visible in DARE.

Collections and Holdings

UvA-DARE holds articles, books, book chapters, conference contributions, PhD dissertations, reports, datasets (metadata only), inaugural lectures, and other scholarly materials. UvA staff produce approximately 7,500 academic publications per year, many of which are deposited in the repository. More than 43,000 publications are available in open access (as of 2020). The repository covers all academic disciplines including arts, humanities, social sciences, sciences, medicine, and technology. Publications in DARE are indexed by Google and Google Scholar and are aggregated in higher-level repositories such as BASE.

Access and Usage

UvA-DARE is freely accessible online at dare.uva.nl. Searching and browsing are available without registration. Open-access publications can be downloaded directly. The repository is compliant with the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) standard.
