The UTokyo Digital Archive Portal is the central online discovery platform for digitized academic and historical collections held by the University of Tokyo. It aggregates metadata from collections and databases independently digitized by the university's various faculties, graduate schools, research institutes, and libraries, enabling cross-searching across the university's entire digital archive estate. The portal is accessible at da.dl.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/portal/en.
The University of Tokyo launched the UTokyo Digital Archives Construction Project in 2017. An Academic Archives Project Office was established within the University of Tokyo Library System to coordinate the archiving and utilization of the university's academic resources. The portal was initially released as the UTokyo Academic Archives Portal and subsequently renamed the UTokyo Digital Archive Portal. It has also partnered with the Internet Archive to share digitized materials from the General Library, making them available in multiple global access points.
The portal aggregates over 149,000 items from across the University of Tokyo's collections. Major collections accessible through the portal include:
The Meiji Shinbun Zasshi Bunko is one of Japan's most significant collections for press history, holding newspapers and periodicals from the Meiji era. The Miyatake Gaikotsu collection documents the career of one of Japan's most influential satirical journalists. Together these holdings make the UTokyo Digital Archive Portal an essential resource for researchers studying Japanese journalism history.
The portal is freely accessible online. Users can search across all connected collections and databases simultaneously, or browse by individual collection. Many items are available for free download as PDFs, particularly through the Internet Archive partnership. Contact: digital-archive@lib.u-tokyo.ac.jp.
