Overview

USA TODAY Fact Check is the fact-checking team of USA Today, part of the Gannett-owned newspaper, verifying claims circulating on social media and in public discourse, including live blog-format fact-checking of political debates, conventions and major speeches. In addition to standard published fact checks, the team works with Meta on its third-party fact-checking program.

History

As of the team's most recently published methodology page, the team was led by editor Eric Litke, who joined as an editor in April 2021 after previously working as a reporter for PolitiFact Wisconsin, a data reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and an investigative reporter for the USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin Investigative Team, with Brad Sylvester, a former managing editor at Check Your Fact, serving as a second editor since September 2022. The team updated its rating definitions in January 2025, moving away from reliance on Meta's rating categories. Litke's public professional profile as of 2026 describes his USA Today fact-check leadership role in the past tense, indicating the team's current leadership may have since changed; this was not independently confirmed.
