The Biblioteca Nacional de Uruguay (National Library of Uruguay) is Uruguay's principal public library and national bibliographic institution, founded in 1816 in Montevideo. It is the oldest and largest public library in Uruguay and serves as the country's official repository for national publications, historical documents, and cultural heritage materials.
The library was founded on May 26, 1816, in Montevideo, making it one of the earliest national libraries established in Latin America. Its origins trace to August 4, 1815, when Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga proposed its creation to the Cabildo of Montevideo, offering to serve as its first director. José Gervasio Artigas, the leader of Uruguay's independence movement, approved the initiative. The inaugural collection was formed through donations, including the bibliographic legacy of presbítero José Manuel Pérez Castellano. The library reopened to the public in 1838 after disruptions during Uruguay's turbulent 19th-century political period. The current neoclassical building on Avenida 18 de Julio, designed by architect Luis Crespi, was inaugurated in 1965.
The National Library holds over 900,000 volumes, including rare manuscripts, independence-era documents, first editions of Uruguayan periodicals, maps, photographs, sheet music, medals, coins, and audiovisual materials. Its Special Materials Room houses incunabula, illuminated books, and unique items of exceptional value. Notable holdings include the 1826 Diálogo—a rare battlefield imprint from the Uruguayan forces—and the country's first newspapers such as The Southern Star (1807). The Newspaper Section preserves a comprehensive collection of Uruguayan periodicals and magazines, making it a vital resource for press history research. Uruguay's 1970 Copyright Law requires publishers to deposit two copies of all printed materials in the National Library. The collection includes approximately 800,000 manuscripts and related items and 35,000 pamphlets.
The library is affiliated with Uruguay's Ministerio de Educación y Cultura. Access to the general collection is open to the public; the Special Materials Room is restricted to registered researchers who must schedule appointments. On-site consultation is required for physical items; a portion of the holdings has been digitized and is accessible remotely through the library's Digital Collections platform.
