The Upper Austria State Archives (German: Oberösterreichisches Landesarchiv, OÖLA) is the central archival institution of the federal state of Upper Austria (Oberösterreich) in Austria. Located at Anzengruberstraße 19 in Linz, it serves as a cultural institution and the central archive for state and district authorities of Upper Austria. The archive holds over 900 collections comprising historical records spanning from the medieval period to the present.
The Oberösterreichisches Landesarchiv was formally established on January 10, 1986, as a modern institution, though its antecedents reach back to the historical archive collections of the Upper Austrian estates and provincial administration. The archive is a successor to earlier record-keeping traditions of the region and today serves both as a repository for government records and as a cultural heritage institution.
The archive's holdings are organized into several major groupings, including the territorial estate archive (Archiv der Landstände), records of state administration, court and financial authority records, and extensive secular and religious manorial records. The archive also holds significant genealogical resources, including records related to Upper Austrian nobility (such as the Hoheneck Collection), church records, and civil registration materials. Court records pertaining to Nazi-era crimes (Gerichtsarchive) and military records from that period are also present. There are extensive descriptions and content lists for each collection, an online biographical database, and certain files available as full-text PDFs online.
The archive is open to researchers for non-commercial research purposes. The reading room can be accessed on weekdays. Contact information and finding aids are available on the archive's website at landesarchiv-ooe.at. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum also holds copies of Holocaust-relevant records from the OÖLA.
