The University of South Carolina was chartered as South Carolina College on 19 December 1801 to unite the state's Lowcountry and upcountry political factions in the wake of the American Revolution. The university closed again in 1877 and reopened in 1880 as an all-white agricultural college; it readmitted African American students in 1963.
