The Institute of Journalism and Media Communication, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland, offers a degree program in Journalism and Social Communication.
The curriculum blends general subjects (political science, history, economics, psychology, sociology, law) with courses tied directly to journalism and related professions, deliberately not organized by media type, so graduates can work across print, radio, television, and online outlets as well as in public relations, promotion, and spokesperson roles. Many practical classes are taught by working journalists, spokespeople, and public relations specialists, using the faculty's radio and television studios and editing suite. The Institute has strengths in political communication, media linguistics, discourse analysis, and international/comparative media systems research.
Journalism education at the University of Silesia began in 1969 with two-year postgraduate studies responding to demand for qualified journalists in Katowice as a publishing center. A Journalism major was created within the Political Sciences degree in 1975, and the Department of Journalism was established in 1977. The unit split from the Institute of Political Science and Journalism to become the standalone Institute of Journalism and Media Communication on October 1, 2019.
