The University of Silesia in Katowice is a public university based in Katowice, Poland, with additional campuses in Sosnowiec, Chorzów and Cieszyn.
Journalism education at the university dates to 1969, when two-year postgraduate studies in journalism were established. A journalism major within the political science degree program was created in 1975, and a Department of Journalism was established in 1977 within the Institute of Political Science. On 1 October 2019, journalism studies split from the Institute of Political Science and Journalism to form the current, separate Institute of Journalism and Media Communication within the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The University of Silesia's roots trace to the Pedagogical Institute in Katowice, established in 1928 and operating until 1939, and to the Higher Pedagogical School in Katowice, established in 1950. A branch of Jagiellonian University was established in Katowice in June 1962. The University of Silesia in Katowice was formed on 8 June 1968 through the combination of the Higher Pedagogical School and the Jagiellonian University branch, and its first academic year began on 1 October 1968 with four faculties, twelve degree programs and close to 6,000 students.
