The University of Sheffield is a public research university in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England.

Journalism and related programs

Journalism education at Sheffield is provided by the School of Information, Journalism and Communication, formed in 2025 through a merger of the School of Journalism, Media and Communication with the university's Information School. The university's Department of Journalism Studies was launched in 1994. The school offers a BA in Journalism Studies, which is accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), and postgraduate degrees including an MA in Broadcast Journalism. It is also home to the Centre for Freedom of the Media (CFOM). The school reported that 91 percent of its research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent in the UK's 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

History

The University of Sheffield traces its origins to Sheffield Medical School, founded in 1828, Firth College, founded in 1879, and Sheffield Technical School, founded in 1884. Firth College merged with the medical school and the technical school in 1897 to form the University College of Sheffield. The college council resolved to apply for a royal charter as a university in 1903, and the University of Sheffield was chartered in 1905.
