The University of Pretoria Archives (UP Archives / UPA) serves as the custodian of the historical and institutional memory of the University of Pretoria (UP), one of South Africa's leading research universities. Located on the Hatfield Campus in Pretoria, the UP Archives preserves over a century of records from all sectors of the university and associated communities.
The University of Pretoria was founded in 1908. The UP Archives documents this history through a rich collection of primary source materials accumulated over more than a century. Collections include administrative records, yearbooks, graduation programs, an expansive photographic archive, and various UP publications. Academic collections of particular note include records of the South African Art Archives, the Transvaal Education Department, and the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS, and Gender. The related UPSpace digital repository (repository.up.ac.za) makes photographic, documentary, and publication collections available online, with contact at +27 12 420 2123.
The UP Archives operates under a formal constitution that governs its role as an information governance partner to the university. It provides guidance on record retention and destruction schedules, and assists staff, students, and external researchers with archival materials for publications, exhibitions, and research projects. Researchers may access collections in person on the Hatfield Campus.
The UP Museum Archive, established in 2022 and located in the Old Arts Building (1910) on Hatfield Campus, is a related but distinct unit focused on preserving the history of the university's art collections. In January 2023, it joined the International Council of Archives (ICA). It holds materials from Dutch collector Van Gybland-Oosterhoff (1887–1937) and sculptor Anton van Wouw (1862–1945), among others.
