The University of Pisa Institutional Repository encompasses the ETD (Electronic Theses and Dissertations) database and the UnipiEprints open archive — two complementary digital repositories operated by the University of Pisa's Library System (Sistema Bibliotecario di Ateneo). Together they provide open access to the academic theses and research outputs of one of Europe's oldest universities.
The University of Pisa's Library System Centre began building a system of digital archives in the late 1990s. The ETD database entered production in 2006 and was registered with the Open Archives Initiative (OAI). At that time it held approximately 3,300 theses. Deposit in the ETD database is largely voluntary for bachelor's and one-year specialization theses but mandatory for higher degrees in accordance with university regulations (updated by decree D.R. 10 marzo 2016, n. 14044). The UnipiEprints archive, powered by EPrints 3 software, was developed alongside ETD to capture a broader range of research outputs. In May 2005, the University of Pisa formally signed the Berlin Declaration on Open Access.
The ETD database holds doctoral, master's, and bachelor's theses discussed at the University of Pisa. Deposited theses may be freely available in full text or subject to an embargo period. Metadata records are publicly visible regardless of full-text access status. UnipiEprints holds journal articles, conference papers, preprints, and educational materials from university faculty and researchers.
The ETD database is accessible at https://etd.adm.unipi.it/. UnipiEprints is available at http://eprints.adm.unipi.it/. Both are open access and support OAI-PMH harvesting.
