The University of Oslo University Archives (Universitetsarkivet) is the official archival unit of the University of Oslo (UiO), Norway's oldest and largest university. It is administered through the University Library and is responsible for preserving and providing access to the institutional records and historical documentation of UiO.
The University of Oslo was founded in 1811, making it one of the oldest universities in the Nordic countries. The University Archives preserves records that document the history, governance, and academic life of the institution from its founding to the present day. The archives are a core component of the University Library's special collections and digitization efforts, which aim to make historical scientific sources and collections available to researchers and the public. Digitized materials are catalogued and made accessible through the cultural heritage platform Alvin and the library discovery system Oria.
The archives hold administrative records, faculty records, and personal papers documenting the academic and institutional history of UiO. Related collections within the University Library include the University History Photobase (UFO), which holds approximately 50,000 digital photographs related to UiO dating from around 1860 to the present. The Norwegian Folklore Archive (NFS), housed at UiO's Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, was included in the Norwegian Memory of the World registry in 2012. Other special collections include papers on Norwegian astronomer Christopher Hansteen, historical educational testing materials, and English Civil War pamphlets.
The archives are accessible to researchers at the University Library's premises in Oslo. Digitized materials are searchable via Alvin and Oria. The archives page is available at https://www.uio.no/....
