The University of North Texas Libraries (UNT Libraries) is the library system of the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. The system is nationally recognized for its web archiving initiatives and serves as a key partner in federal digital preservation efforts.
The UNT Libraries were formally organized alongside the university's growth through the twentieth century. The Willis Library, the system's main branch, opened in 1971 and was renamed in honor of regent A.M. Willis Jr. in 1978. The University Archives were established in 1975 to house records of enduring value. In 1997, UNT Libraries became one of the first academic institutions in the United States to archive websites, partnering with the Government Printing Office to launch the CyberCemetery — an archive of websites from defunct federal agencies and commissions. In 2006, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) designated UNT Libraries an Affiliated Archives, one of only ten at the time and one of only three educational institutions (the other two being military academies) to hold this status.
The UNT Libraries comprise several branches housing business, economics, education, humanities, social science, music, and science collections, as well as microforms, rare books, and special collections. The Archives holds over 1,400 linear feet of processed material, more than 1,500 oral history transcripts, and approximately 400 ledgers from Texas county offices. Since 2015, UNT Libraries has served as the official archival repository for the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, preserving materials from notable performers dating back to the Academy's founding in 1977. The Digital Library hosts the CyberCemetery and other major digitization initiatives.
The CyberCemetery preserves the websites and publications of defunct U.S. government agencies and commissions, providing permanent public access to this federal information. The collection is part of National Archives Record Group 287 and is maintained under a long-standing agreement with NARA and the Government Publishing Office. UNT Libraries is also a founding member of the National Digital Stewardship Alliance and participates in the End of Term Web Archive, a collaborative project to snapshot federal web presence at presidential transitions.
Collections are accessible in person at multiple campus branches and digitally through the UNT Digital Library at https://digital.library.unt.edu/. The CyberCemetery is available at https://govinfo.library.unt.edu/.
