The School of Journalism and Media, part of the College of Communication and Information, offers an undergraduate major in Journalism along with a minor in video game development added in 2022 and a sport communication, media, and promotion certificate created in 2023 with the Department of Communication and the Department of Integrated Strategic Communication.
The school houses the Scripps Howard First Amendment Center, which presents the annual James Madison Award honoring a Kentuckian who champions the First Amendment, and the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues. The Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame, established in 1980, is located within the school.
Journalism instruction at the University of Kentucky dates to 1869 through the English Department; a dedicated Department of Journalism was established in 1914 under Enoch Grehan. The department became the School of Journalism in 1950, and a new journalism building, funded partly by a gift from the student-run Kentucky Kernel, was dedicated in 1951 and named Grehan Journalism Building in his honor. In 1968 the school joined a new School of Communication alongside Telecommunications and Speech; in 1976 journalism separated again to help form the College of Communications. The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees approved the current name, School of Journalism and Media, in 2016.
Erika Engstrom: Director of the School of Journalism and Media.
Enoch Grehan: Founding department head (1914-1932), who personally financed a linotype machine for the Kentucky Kernel's printing operation.
Ramona Rush: First dean of the College of Communications, appointed in 1977.
The Kentucky Kernel, the university's student newspaper, became fully independent of the university on January 19, 1972, and won a national Pacemaker Award in 2000, one of only six daily collegiate newspapers to receive the honor that year.
