In 1909, Chancellor Frank Strong authorized a journalism department within the College of Arts and Sciences. Following the 1944 death of William Allen White, the renowned editor of the Emporia Gazette, the Kansas Board of Regents established the William Allen White School of Journalism and Public Information in his honor; the school was among the first group nationally accredited in 1948. It moved into its present building in 1952, renamed Flint Hall and later Stauffer-Flint Hall following a $1 million gift from Oscar Stauffer. The school adopted its current name in 1982.
Judith Rosenbaum-Andre: Incoming dean, announced May 2026, joining from the University of Maine, where she was associate dean for faculty affairs and chair of the Department of Communication and Journalism.
Ann Brill: Dean for 20 years, stepping down in 2025 to return to teaching after leading a $7 million renovation of Stauffer-Flint Hall and creating the school's doctoral program.
