Overview

The Repositorio Académico de la Universidad de Chile is the institutional open-access repository of the Universidad de Chile (University of Chile), the country's oldest and most prominent public university. It is managed by the Dirección de Servicios de Información y Bibliotecas (SISIB — Directorate of Information and Library Services) and operates on the DSpace platform developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), adapted to the institution's specific needs. The repository was established with records dating from at least 2006–2007 and formally organised under SISIB.

Collections and Holdings

The repository contains more than 73,000 digital publications and encompasses all types of academic documents produced by the university's teachers and researchers: journal articles (pre-prints and post-prints), books, book chapters, theses and dissertations, technical reports, conference presentations, and teaching materials. Content is organised hierarchically into communities corresponding to schools, colleges, and central agencies of the university. The repository uses the Dublin Core metadata scheme and is compliant with the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) interoperability protocol, increasing the visibility of documents internationally.

Access and Usage

The Repositorio Académico is an open-access service; anyone with an internet connection can freely consult materials deposited here. Restrictions on specific documents are set by individual authors or academic units. Depositing documents in the repository is not mandatory for academics, but is encouraged to ensure lasting dissemination and preservation of the university's intellectual memory. A university decree (No. 20795 de 2003) established the obligation to submit an electronic copy of undergraduate and postgraduate theses to the repository.
