The University of Basel, founded on 4 April 1460 following a Papal Bull issued by Pope Pius II in 1459, is the oldest university in Switzerland. The University Archive is correspondingly one of the country's oldest institutional archives, with holdings extending back to the university's founding era. Since 1904 the archive has been held as a deposit (Depositum) at the State Archives of the Canton of Basel-Stadt (Staatsarchiv Basel-Stadt, StABS). A detailed institutional history of the archive was published by Dr. Hermann Wichers: Das Archiv der Universität Basel (Basel, 2010).
The University of Basel is subject to the Archives Act of the Canton of Basel-Stadt (Archivgesetz). All organisational units of the university must retain documents until they are no longer required for current business, then offer them to the State Archives. The university's Archiving Regulations have been in force since 2008. The university archivist acts as a liaison (Zwischenarchiv) between record-generating units and the State Archives.
The archive's oldest holdings include the Stiftungsbulle (Papal Bull of Foundation) of 1459. Holdings are catalogued in the State Archives' online portal under the designations Ältere Nebenarchive/Universitätsarchiv and Neuere Nebenarchive/UNI-REG. The collection encompasses records from the university's central administration, faculties, and institutes, spanning centuries of institutional history and including correspondence, minutes, examination records, and personnel files. The archive is closely associated with the Archives & Collections division (Archiv & Sammlungen) of the university's General Secretariat, which also oversees the university's scientific collections.
Access to archived materials is granted at the State Archives of the Canton of Basel-Stadt in accordance with applicable legal provisions. The university archivist advises university units on records management and assists researchers with queries about the location of records.
