The Universitätsarchiv der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (University Archive of LMU Munich) is the institutional archive of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, one of Germany's oldest and most distinguished universities. The archive preserves records documenting more than 550 years of university history and serves as the central repository for the university's administrative, academic, and historical documentation.
LMU Munich traces its origins to 1472, when Duke Ludwig IX the Wealthy of Bavaria founded Bavaria's first university in Ingolstadt. The institution relocated to Landshut in 1800 and then to Munich in 1826. The University Archive developed alongside the institution to manage the growing documentary heritage. Today the archive is part of the University Library system and operates under the Bayerisches Archivgesetz (Bavarian Archive Law).
The University Archive holds records spanning the full history of LMU from its Ingolstadt origins, including faculty records, academic senate minutes, administrative correspondence, and historical documents relating to notable scholars and episodes in the university's history. The archive also manages the university's collections. The University Library, closely allied with the Archive, holds over 3,400 manuscripts (including more than 650 medieval manuscripts), approximately 3,600 incunabula, 185 personal papers collections, and around 475,000 early printed works from 1501 to 1900—the second largest historical collection in Bavaria. Holocaust-era records relating to the Nazi period and the White Rose resistance group are among the historically significant holdings.
The archive reading room is located within the University Library on Geschwister-Scholl-Platz. Researchers can access holdings by appointment. The archive provides advisory services to academic and administrative staff, manages digital acquisition of university records, and compiles publications on university history. Finding aids and inventories are available to assist research.
