History and Founding

LONTAR, which stands for Library Automation and Digital Archive, is the integrated library and digital catalog system of Universitas Indonesia (UI), one of Indonesia's oldest and largest universities. Universitas Indonesia traces its origins to 1849 and is based in Depok, West Java, with a presence in Jakarta. The Central Library of UI is among the largest academic libraries in Asia, with a collection that reached 1.5 million books as of 2007. The LONTAR system serves as the unified digital interface for searching, accessing, and downloading library collections across all UI faculties and disciplines.

Collections and Holdings

LONTAR provides access to a comprehensive range of materials including books, magazines, journals, newspapers, and digital academic works. The system offers access to UI theses and dissertations (both open access and membership-restricted categories), research reports, and an extensive e-resources portfolio of over 71 online databases comprising more than 46,000 e-journal titles and over 150,000 e-book titles. The library's holdings include collections from the former Dutch Indies Medical School, which contains rare colonial-era medical journals and publications from the Geneeskundig Tijdschrift Nederlandsch-Indië. Manuscript collections and naskah (traditional manuscripts) are also accessible through the system. A UIANA service supports institutional repository deposit and retrieval for academic works.

Access and Usage

LONTAR is accessible online at lontar.ui.ac.id and lib.ui.ac.id for catalog searches. Physical library access is available at the UI campus in Depok, with service hours Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some digital collections require UI membership or a university account; others are open access.
