Use of DataThe documentary heritage program at the Universidad de los Andes has its roots in the founding of the university on November 16, 1948, by Mario Laserna Pinzón and a group of young Colombian intellectuals. It was established as Colombia's first private, secular, politically independent institution of higher education. A formal institutional archive was created on February 25, 1982, initially under the Central Library, before passing to the Secretaría General in 1989. On April 15, 2009, the Comité Ejecutivo approved renaming it the Oficina de Administración Documental (OAD). The digital Repositorio de Patrimonio Documental y Bibliográfico was developed as an innovative platform to conserve, manage, and provide immersive digital access to the university's historical collections.
The archive holds institutional records, personal collections, photographic materials, and rare books. Holdings include the Fototeca, comprising over 10,000 photographs documenting the history of the university campus and Colombian society; the Mario Laserna Pinzón collection, featuring correspondence, speeches, and the Semanario El Mercurio; the CCELA collection, containing documentation on indigenous Colombian languages in paper, audio, and video formats; honors and distinctions conferred on the university by national and international institutions; and five incunabula published between 1478 and 1494. A notable restoration program preserves rare Renaissance-era books such as a 1584 Biblia Hebraica and a 1530 Postillae Sevillano. The earliest documents in the archive date to 1591.
The collection includes the Semanario El Mercurio, a short-lived intellectual weekly newspaper conceived by founder Mario Laserna Pinzón, which provides a primary source for early Colombian independent press history.
The digital repository is freely accessible online and offers immersive navigation experiences for select digitized collections. Physical collections at the central and historical archive are accessible to internal and external researchers during office hours. Access conditions are governed by confidentiality levels and copyright policy; sensitive records require prior authorization from the producing unit.
