The Archivo Histórico of the Universidad de Antioquia (UdeA) was created by Rectoral Resolution 5375 on December 9, 1994, making it the first historical archive of any public university in Colombia. The impetus for its establishment arose from a devastating fire on June 8, 1973, which destroyed the administrative block of the Ciudad Universitaria in Medellín and consumed thousands of historical documents. A project to formally protect the institution's surviving documentary heritage was proposed in 1993 by a multidisciplinary team of historians, library scientists, and archivists. The archive is an administrative unit of the División de Gestión Documental (formerly the Departamento de Administración Documental).
The archive custodies three principal documentary funds: the Fondo Universidad de Antioquia (1809–2017), comprising administrative and academic records from the institution's predecessors (San Francisco de la Villa de la Candelaria, 1803; Colegio de Antioquia, 1822; and the Colegio del Estado, 1860) through to the modern university; the Fondo Reconstrucción del Eje Cafetero (FORE); and the Fondo Acumulativo Universitario (FAU). Documentary series include minutes, resolutions, enrollment and grade books, labor histories, academic histories, contracts, and correspondence. The University Museum (MUUA) also holds related historical photograph archives and special personal collections, including the Fondo Fidel Cano and the Fondo El Espectador, both of which contain significant media history materials.
The archive's museum component holds personal funds linked to the history of Colombian journalism, including the Fondo Fidel Cano, associated with the founder of El Espectador, one of Colombia's most important newspapers. These collections provide primary sources for the history of the Colombian press and media landscape.
The archive is open to the university community and to external researchers. It is located in Room 109, Block 3, Ciudad Universitaria, Calle 67 No. 53–108, Medellín. Researchers may contact the archive by phone or email to schedule consultations. Academic histories prior to 2000 and records of deceased alumni can be requested by families and researchers.
