u-Pustaka (Ubiquitous Pustaka) is Malaysia's national digital library gateway, operated by the National Library of Malaysia (Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia, PNM) under the Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture Malaysia. The portal provides Malaysians with unified, anytime-anywhere access to a wide range of digital resources, electronic databases, e-books, and library services through a single online platform, available in both Bahasa Melayu and English.
u-Pustaka originated as a pilot project initiated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under Malaysia's National Broadband Initiative. The project was approved by the Integrated Content Development Task Force (ICON) on 24 September 2008. The pilot was launched on 31 March 2011, initially involving eight libraries: the National Library of Malaysia, the Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, and Sabah State Library Corporations, Sarawak State Library, Kuala Lumpur Library, and the INTAN Library at Bukit Kiara. On 1 January 2013, u-Pustaka was formally handed over to the National Library of Malaysia, which has managed and expanded the service since. The portal's underlying infrastructure, including the national union catalogue and digital repository system, was developed in part by MIMOS Berhad.
u-Pustaka provides centralized access to more than 7.5 million electronic resources, including e-books from local and international publishers, online academic databases, and digital content from member libraries. Notable subscribed databases include EBSCO Premier Package, Emerald Management and Engineering collections, and the Bernama Library and Infolink Service (BLIS) for news archives. The portal also supports inter-library lending services, web publishing, and content management across its consortium of state and national libraries. Member libraries contribute subject-specialized local content, with consortium libraries each focusing on distinct regional topics such as agriculture, art and culture, history, and industry.
Registration for u-Pustaka is free to all Malaysian citizens. Members can borrow e-books and access online databases through the portal at www.u-library.gov.my. The platform enables seamless access to both physical library catalogues (via a national union catalogue integrating RFID-tracked collections) and digital content. Advanced features include a unified search across physical and digital holdings, e-payment services, and virtual reference.
u-Pustaka represents a significant step in Malaysia's national digital infrastructure strategy, aiming to democratize access to information and foster a knowledge-based society. The portal aligns with Malaysia's broader digital transformation goals and serves as a model for national digital library integration across Southeast Asia.
