The School of Journalism and Communication (TSJC) offers a B.A. in journalism, an M.A. in communication, and a Ph.D. in communication, along with joint international master's programs.
TSJC's research areas include journalism, international journalism and communication, film and television communication, new media communication, and media management. The school received preliminary accreditation from the US-based Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC) in October 2009 and describes its international student body as the largest among China's journalism schools. Joint programs include the Global Business Journalism program with the International Center for Journalists and Bloomberg News, a dual-degree program with the University of Southern California's Annenberg School and Viterbi School of Engineering, and a dual-degree program launched in 2024 with Nanyang Technological University's Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.
Tsinghua's journalism teaching traces to the 1920s, when Liang Qichao, described as a founding figure of China's modern press, taught at Tsinghua's Institute of Chinese Classics. A Department of Communication was established under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in October 1998, launching an M.A. program in communication (2000), a B.A. program in journalism (2001), and a Ph.D. program in communication (2003). The School of Journalism and Communication was formally founded in April 2002, with Fan Jingyi, former editor-in-chief of People's Daily, as its first dean.
