Troy University is a public university based in Troy, Alabama, with additional campuses across Alabama, the United States and abroad.
The Hall School of Journalism and Communication, part of the College of Arts and Humanities, offers degree programs in broadcast journalism and multimedia journalism as well as advertising, communication studies and public relations. Students work on the university's student newspaper, the Tropolitan, and its student-produced television newscasts, TrojanVision. The Radio Television Digital News Association has ranked Troy's journalism program 6th nationally.
Troy University was established by an act of the Alabama Legislature on 26 February 1887 as the State Normal School at Troy, one of roughly 180 normal schools founded by U.S. state governments in the 19th century to train public school teachers. The institution was renamed Troy State Teachers College in 1929, Troy State College in 1957 and Troy State University in 1967. In 2004 the university dropped "State" from its name, and in 2005 its Alabama branch campuses in Montgomery, Phenix City and Dothan merged with the main campus under a single accreditation as Troy University.
