Tortoise News founded in 2018 is a British digital news website created by James Harding (from BBC News and the Times) and Matthew Barzun (former US ambassador to the UK). Dissatisfied with the state of news production that favors quick soundbites over depth, Tortoise News became part of the Slow News movement. The name of the site comes from the Aesop fable, the Tortoise and the Hare, which ends with the aphorism, “Slow and steady wins the race.” The metaphor implies that slowing down and being cautious produces a better product. Slow news focuses on what is driving the news rather than just reporting on breaking news.
Tortoise News uses a membership model that gives subscribers access to the news stories they publish, the podcasts they produce, and live discussions called “Think Ins” and “Discussion Lates.”
