Overview

The Tohoku University Digital Archives (ToUDA) is a unified digital platform launched by Tohoku University Library providing open, free access to the university's extensive historical and cultural collections. The Archives Collection specifically contains digitized institutional records from Tohoku University Archives, including documents transferred from academic departments and donated by individuals and affiliated organizations.

History and Founding

Planning for a centralized digital archive began in 2019, with digitization work commencing in 2022. The platform was launched at the start of the academic year and incorporates collections previously maintained in disparate formats across multiple university departments. The Archives Collection on ToUDA draws from the Tohoku University Archives, which was established in 1907 and is located at the Katahira Campus in Sendai.

Collections and Holdings

The Archives Collection on ToUDA includes official university documents deemed historically significant that have been transferred from their originating departments, materials collected from alumni associations and related organizations, university-published materials, and photographic records created by the university. A major thematic sub-collection documents the "Long 1960s," covering student movements and social upheaval from the 1950s through the 1970s, including materials related to student protests, official administrative documents, and records of individuals and organizations associated with that period.

Separate ToUDA collections include the Soseki Natsume Collection (approximately 1,650 foreign books and 1,200 Japanese and Chinese books from the novelist's personal library), classical Chinese and Japanese texts including rare copies of the Shiji and Ruiju Kokushi, and holdings related to Tibetan Buddhist canon materials and other humanities subjects.

Access and Usage

ToUDA is freely accessible online in Japanese and English to all users without registration. The platform supports free-word search across all collections and advanced search by title, author, and date. The Tohoku University Archives physical holdings are open to the public at the Katahira Campus.
