Biography

Tina Brown was born November 21, 1953, in Maidenhead, England, and studied at St Anne's College, Oxford. She became editor-in-chief of the British society magazine Tatler in 1979, reversing its declining sales, before Condé Nast acquired the title in 1982. In 1984, Condé Nast brought her to New York to edit Vanity Fair, where she rebuilt circulation and shaped the magazine's mix of celebrity culture and serious journalism, including its widely noted 1991 cover photograph of a nude, pregnant Demi Moore.

In 1992, Brown moved to Condé Nast's The New Yorker, serving as its editor-in-chief until 1998. She then left Condé Nast to launch Talk magazine and the Talk Miramax Books publishing imprint with backing from Miramax Films and the Hearst Corporation; Talk reached a monthly circulation of more than 670,000 before the venture folded in 2002.

In 2008, Brown partnered with media executive Barry Diller's IAC to launch The Daily Beast, an online news and commentary site, serving as its founding editor-in-chief; the site won News Website of the Year honors in 2012 and 2013. In 2010, The Daily Beast merged with Newsweek magazine, recently sold for $1 by The Washington Post Company, to form the Newsweek Daily Beast Company, with Brown as editor-in-chief of both publications. Newsweek ended its print edition in 2012 to become an all-digital publication. Brown left the company in September 2013 after her contract was not renewed, and went on to found her own company, Tina Brown Live Media.

In 2009, Brown founded Women in the World, a live journalism platform for women leaders and activists, which held ten sold-out annual summits at New York's Lincoln Center between 2010 and 2020 and expanded internationally to London, Toronto, Dubai and Delhi. She is the author of several books, including the New York Times bestseller The Diana Chronicles (2007), The Vanity Fair Diaries (2017), and The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor – the Truth and the Turmoil (2022). She hosted the podcast TBD with Tina Brown in 2018. Brown was married to editor, publisher and historian Sir Harold Evans from 1981 until his death in 2020; the couple had two children. In 2023, in partnership with Reuters and Durham University, she launched Truth Tellers, the first annual Sir Harry Evans Global Summit in Investigative Journalism, held in his honor. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2000, inducted into the Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame in 2007, and honored as a Library Lion by the New York Public Library in 2021.
