Use of Datatheses.fr is the national search portal for French doctoral theses, developed and operated by the Agence bibliographique de l'enseignement supérieur (ABES), a French public administrative institution based in Montpellier and operating under the authority of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. The portal serves as the authoritative single point of access for doctoral theses defended at French universities and grandes écoles, as well as for theses currently in preparation.
ABES was established by interministerial decree (No. 94-921) on 24 October 1994 to implement and manage the Système universitaire de documentation (SUDOC), the collective catalogue of French higher education libraries. As part of the Portail des thèses project entrusted to ABES in 2009 by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, theses.fr was developed and launched in 2011. It consolidates and supersedes earlier dispersed systems for thesis signaling, drawing its data from the STAR (Signalement des Thèses et Archivage) and STEP (Signalement des Thèses en Préparation) professional applications used by member institutions. In 2016, a ministerial decree mandated all-electronic thesis submission across France, further expanding the portal's coverage and utility.
theses.fr references all doctoral theses defended in France since 1985, regardless of their physical medium (print or digital). It also lists doctoral subjects currently in preparation at French higher education establishments, where the registering institution has chosen to report them and where the doctoral student has not objected to disclosure. In addition to bibliographic records, the portal provides information on the persons and organizations associated with each thesis. Full text is available online for a substantial and growing subset of theses. As of recent years, the portal indexes tens of thousands of theses in preparation and hundreds of thousands of completed doctorates across all disciplines.
theses.fr is freely accessible online at theses.fr. Users can search by keyword, author, institution, discipline, supervisor, or date. Advanced features include social network sharing, RSS feed subscriptions for newly deposited theses, and export of result lists. The portal is available in both French and English interfaces. Data produced by ABES is released under the open Etalab licence, making it freely reusable with attribution. The portal is widely used by researchers, librarians, and academic institutions internationally as a reference tool for French scholarly output.
As France's national doctoral thesis portal, theses.fr fills a critical role in the national research information infrastructure. It is referenced by major international library research guides and dissertation databases as the primary tool for locating French doctoral work. The portal complements related ABES tools including the SUDOC collective catalogue, Calames (for archives and manuscripts), and IdRef (authority data), forming a comprehensive bibliographic infrastructure for French higher education and research.
