Manchester, Vermont, USA
The Manchester Journal is a weekly newspaper covering Manchester, Vermont, and the surrounding area. It is owned by Vermont News and Media LLC.
Founded as a weekly in May 1861 by Charles A. Pierce, a Brattleboro publisher. D.K. Simonds joined the staff in 1871 and purchased the Journal that year, remaining owner, publisher and editor for 34 years. Simonds sold to Otto Bennett in 1905; Bennett's son G. Stewart Bennett took over in 1940 and sold the paper to Jim and Gayle Gall in 1968. The Miller family of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, publishers of The Berkshire Eagle, acquired the Journal in 1983 and sold it, along with the Eagle, Brattleboro Reformer and Bennington Banner, to MediaNews Group in 1995. Alden Global Capital acquired MediaNews Group in 2013 as Digital First Media. Local investors bought the four-paper group back from Digital First Media in April 2016 as New England Newspapers Inc. In May 2021, NENI sold the Journal, along with the Brattleboro Reformer and Bennington Banner, to Vermont News and Media LLC, owned by Vermont software entrepreneur Paul Belogour.
