History

Traces its history to 1840, when the Howard Free Press was established in Ellicott Mills (later Ellicott City) by Edward Waite and Matthew Fields. A succession of Howard County newspapers followed over the 19th and 20th centuries. The title passed through the Patuxent Publishing Company, which the Baltimore Sun Media Group purchased, integrating the Howard County Times and the Columbia Flier into its stable of weeklies; the Columbia Flier ceased print publication in 2023, with its coverage folded into the Howard County Times. On Jan. 15, 2024, Baltimore Sun Media, including the Howard County Times, was sold to David D. Smith, executive chairman of Sinclair Broadcast Group, with conservative commentator Armstrong Williams holding an undisclosed minority stake.
