The Herald is a daily broadsheet newspaper published in Glasgow, Scotland, covering Scottish and UK news, politics, business and culture. It is part of the Herald & Times Group, alongside its sister papers the Glasgow Times and the Herald on Sunday, and is owned by Newsquest Media Group, a subsidiary of the American media company USA Today Co.
The Herald was founded in Glasgow in January 1783 by Edinburgh-born printer John Mennons, launching as a weekly publication called the Glasgow Advertiser. Mennons' first edition carried a global scoop: word of the Treaties of Versailles, ending the American Revolutionary War, reached him via the Lord Provost of Glasgow just as he was assembling the paper. The publication's title was later simplified from The Glasgow Herald to The Herald in 1992.
In 1996, the paper was purchased by Scottish Television (STV), later known as the Scottish Media Group (SMG). Gannett's (USA Today Co) UK subsidiary agreed to acquire SMG's newspaper publishing assets—including The Herald, the Sunday Herald and the Evening Times (later the Glasgow Times)—in a deal reported at $346 million, extending Gannett's UK newspaper holdings into Scotland for the first time. Since then, The Herald has operated under Newsquest Media Group ownership. Catherine Salmond currently serves as editor.
1783 (founding issue) — The Herald's first edition, published as the weekly Glasgow Advertiser, broke news of the Treaties of Versailles ending the American Revolutionary War—placing the paper's founding within hours of the peace that created the United States.
