The Free Press (also known as The FP) is an American media company based in New York City, publishing news, investigative reporting and commentary, and hosting the podcast Honestly. Since October 2025 it has operated as an independent entity within CBS News.
Bari Weiss, a former New York Times opinion editor who resigned in 2020 citing the paper's culture, and her spouse Nellie Bowles launched the outlet as a Substack newsletter called Common Sense in January 2021. It grew into an associated media company and was rebranded The Free Press in 2022. In October 2025, Paramount Skydance, led by David Ellison, acquired The Free Press for a reported $150 million, and Weiss was named editor-in-chief of CBS News, overseeing both outlets and reporting directly to Ellison. At the time of the deal, The Free Press had roughly 1.5 million subscribers, including about 75,000 paying subscribers as of a November 2023 count.
