Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
The Coast is a free alternative weekly newspaper covering Halifax, Nova Scotia, focused on local arts, culture and news. It is owned by Overstory Media Group.
The Coast was founded in 1993 by Christine Oreskovich and Kyle Shaw, alongside four other university friends, after graduating from journalism school. It grew into a roughly 100-page weekly by the turn of the millennium and became a training ground for journalists including Craig Silverman and cartoonist Michael de Adder. The paper laid off nearly 20 staff and paused print publication in March 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting to a digital-only model. Oreskovich and Shaw sold The Coast to Overstory Media Group in April 2022. Oreskovich left the company in 2024 due to health issues; Shaw, who had continued as editor, left in March 2025. In July 2025, Halifax Examiner editor Tim Bousquet reported that with the founders and other reporters gone, some content bylined "Team Coast" may be AI-generated, a concern echoed by Overstory's own internal AI-use committee findings, according to Shaw.
