The Canary is a left-leaning UK news website covering politics, along with global affairs, satire, science, environment and health sections. As of 2026 it operates under CEO Steve Topple and is launching an accompanying daily print tabloid.
The Canary launched October 14, 2015, founded by Kerry-Anne Mendoza and her wife Nancy Mendoza with roughly £500 in starting capital and five founding members, initially funded by advertising and about 1,500 monthly supporters. It gained prominence around the UK's 2017 general election and Jeremy Corbyn's Labour leadership. Kerry-Anne Mendoza stepped down as director and editor-at-large in July 2021 citing mental health reasons, transferring her shares to colleagues; Nancy Mendoza left the company in June 2022. In October 2022, staff announced they had taken over management from June of that year, running the outlet as a workers' co-operative under a new company, Canary Workers' Co-op Ltd. In 2025, the company dissolved that co-operative structure after taking an investment from Cecil Hetherington, founder of Used Cars NI and chair of Propertypal, whose company Ulidia Investments holds between 25% and 50% of Canary shares. Under CEO Steve Topple, The Canary launched a daily weekday print tabloid in 2026, printing Monday to Friday at £1.20 per copy.
