The Bennington Banner

Overview

The Bennington Banner is a daily newspaper covering Bennington, Vermont, distributed throughout southwestern Vermont and eastern New York's Rensselaer and Washington counties. It is owned by Vermont News and Media LLC.

History

Vermont newspaperman Frank E. Howe bought two Bennington weeklies in 1902 and merged them into the daily Bennington Banner. Lawrence and Donald Miller, sons of Pittsfield, Massachusetts newspaperman Kelton B. Miller, purchased the Banner around 1960-61; the Miller family also owned The Berkshire Eagle. Kelton Miller's grandson, also named Kelton Miller, published the Banner from 1977 until the Miller family sold it, along with The Berkshire Eagle, Brattleboro Reformer and Manchester Journal, to MediaNews Group in July 1995 for a reported $39 million. In 2013, MediaNews Group was acquired by Alden Global Capital under the Digital First Media umbrella. In April 2016, a group of local Berkshire County investors -- retired judge Fredric D. Rutberg, former Visa president John C. "Hans" Morris, M&T Bank chairman Robert G. Wilmers and former Buffalo News publisher Stanford Lipsey -- bought the four-newspaper group, New England Newspapers Inc. (NENI), back from Digital First Media. In May 2021, NENI sold the Banner, along with the Brattleboro Reformer and Manchester Journal, to Vermont News and Media LLC, owned by Vermont-based software entrepreneur Paul Belogour, while NENI retained The Berkshire Eagle.

Notable works

Won the national Ayer Award for excellence in typography, make-up and printing in 1967. A copy of the Bennington Banner appears in Norman Rockwell's painting Freedom from Fear, part of his Four Freedoms series.
