Baltimore, Maryland (print/digital)
The Baltimore Times is a free weekly newspaper covering the African-American community in and around Baltimore, Maryland, built around the tagline "positive stories about positive people."
The paper was founded in November 1986 by Joy and Peter Bramble in their Baltimore home, after Joy Bramble grew frustrated with local news coverage that centered crime and negative stories about Black Baltimoreans. It began as a monthly before shifting to weekly publication within its first month. The Brambles later launched sister publications including the Annapolis Times, The Shore Times, The Prince George's County Times, and The Baltimore County Times, and in 1998 formed Times Community Services, a 501(c)(3) philanthropic arm. Paris Brown now leads the paper as Joy Bramble's successor.
The Times covers business, education, health, and community news centered on positive achievements in the Black community, and since 1992 has presented the annual Positive People Awards recognizing Baltimore leaders.
The paper is distributed free in print, circulating to roughly 32,000 readers, and published online at baltimoretimes-online.com with ongoing video and podcast expansion.
