Who's behind the news?

Baltimore Sun balances local and national news

Locals rely on Sun's breadth

The Baltimore Sun, "The Sun", covers regional Maryland news with a long history of maintaining national and international news bureaus. It has won numerous journalism awards including sixteen Pulitzer Prizes to date.

Journalist and cultural critic H.L. Mencken (1880-1956), known as "the sage of Baltimore," rose to fame as a staffer The Sun, where he worked for more than four decades.

Founded in 1837 by Arunah Shepherdson Abell, William Moseley Swain, and Azariah H. Simmons, The Sun remained in local hands for one-hundred and fifty years until its sale, in 1986, to The Times-Mirror company of Los Angeles. In 2021, Alden Global Capital acquired it as part of its merger with Tribune Publishing, one of the successors of Times-Mirror.

In September 2008, The Sun joined with the station WJZ-TV, owned and operated by CBS. This collaboration enabled content and story sharing, each service promoting the other's product.

The Baltimore Sun offers subscription plans that include full digital access at low cost. Subscribers gain access to the eNewspaper, app, and exclusive discounts, with the benefit of reduced ad volume. A second, limited subscription option offers the Wednesday and Sunday paper with full digital access. Along with subscriptions, the newspaper generates revenue through advertisements and print sales. To enhance revenue, The Baltimore Sun utilizes third parties and cookies, employing internet-based advertising and online analytics. The Sun’s peak revenue in 2022 reached $190 Million. Sources
